Chapter 1: Patient Zero
[Young Little Carly climbs into Ram's bedroom through the window]
Young Little Carly- I was out walking and somebody locked the doors early. I didn't want to wake everybody, so when I saw your window open. . . . You're not going to tell Cap, are you?
Ram- How did you climb up?
Young Little Carly- It's how we always got in to play tricks on the governess. Baby Max can make it with a whole jar of spiders in his paw.
Ram- S-spiders?
[Young Little Carly nods]
Ram- Were you out walking all by yourself?
[Ram notices the dress is filthy]
Ram- If we wash that dress tonight, nobody would notice it tomorrow.
[Ram hands Young Little Carly a spare nightgown]
Ram- You could put this on. Take your dress and put it to soak in the bathtub. Come back here and sit on the bed, and we'll have a talk.
Young Little Carly- I told you today I didn't need a governess.
[Ram gives her a look]
Young Little Carly- Well, maybe I do.
[Young Little Carly goes into the bathroom to change. Baby Leah barges into the room, with a scared look on her face]
Ram- Baby Leah, are you scared?
[Baby Leah shakes her head no, but jumps when the thunder sounds again. She runs over to Ram and hugs her leg]
Ram- You're not frightened of a storm, are you? You just stay right here with me.
[Ram picks up Baby Leah and sits down on the bed and puts Baby Leah in her lap]
Ram- (to Baby Leah) Where are the others?
Baby Leah- (to Ram) They're asleep. They're not scared.
[Thunder roars]
Ram- Oh, no? Look.
[Baby Angel, Baby Sydney, Young Cassie the Cat, and Young Little Kelly run into the room, all looking terrified]
Ram- Alright, up here on the bed.
Baby Angel -Really?
Ram-Well, just this once. Come on.
[The group of girls climb onto the bed as Young Little Carly comes out of the bathroom in the nightgown Ram gave her]
Ram -Now we'll wait for the boys.
Baby Sydney -You won't see them. Boys are brave.
[Thunder roars and Baby Max, Baby Duck, Baby Hack, Young Little Ropo, and Young Little Donny run into the room, but stop as soon as they step into it]
Ram- You weren't scared, were you?
Young Little Ropo- Oh, no. We just wanted to be sure that you weren't.
Ram -That's very thoughtful of you.
Young Little Ropo-It wasn't my idea. It was Baby Duck's!
Ram- Baby Duck! That's the one I left out! Notch bless Baby Duck.
[Thunder booms, scaring the kids and causing the boys to jump onto the bed]
Baby Max- (to Ram) Why does it do that?
Ram- The lightning talks to the thunder, and the thunder answers.
Baby Duck- But lightning must be nasty.
Ram -Not really.
Baby Angel - Why does the thunder get so angry?
Baby Leah- It makes me want to cry.
Ram- Whenever I'm feeling unhappy, I just try to think of nice things.
Baby Sydney and Baby Duck- What kind of things?
Ram - Well, let me see. Nice things. . . .
[Ram thinks for a minute]
Daffodils.
Green meadows.
Skies full of stars.
Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens

These are a few of my favorite things
When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad
Baby Sydney -Does it really work?
Ram -Of course it does. You try it. What things do you like?
Baby Sydney -Pussy willow!
Baby Angel -Christmas!
Baby Leah-Bunny rabbits!
Young Little Donny- Snakes!
Young Cassie- Chocolate icing!

[Herobrine Jr. enters]
Sick Carlos De Vil x Noel Forest
Carlos sat at the dinner table with the rest of his friends. He was holding his head in his left hand, pooling small amounts of stew into his spoon only to place his filled spoon back into the bowl, without putting any of it into his mouth. “Do you not like the food?” Ben asked noticing Carlos had barely eaten any of his dinner.
Carlos looked up and shook his head, “No, no it’s good.” He said taking a forced bite. Carlos didn’t want to seem rude in front of Ben or his family. They had been kind enough to invite Mal to stay for the summer and extend their invitation to Carlos, Jay (who declined to be with his girlfriend, C.J), Noel, and Evie. They even managed to get permission to take Dude with them who was currently eating in the chair next to him (Belle didn’t really approve, but Adam insisted even though none of the teens had expected a dog to be dining with them at the table). But at the moment he didn’t really have much of an appetite or want to eat anything to further irritate the upset stomach he could already feel forming. He figured it must have been the drive to Ben’s summer home along with the amounts of junk food he had eaten on the way that made him feel this way. It would fade eventually.
“We can get you something else.” Belle, Ben’s mother, offered.
Carlos looked at her, the rest of the people at the table; they were all looking at him. “No really it’s great. I think I’m just tired from the trip.”
Everyone went back to their meals, content with his answer. “Are you alright hon?” Noel, his girlfriend, asked in a voice low enough for only Carlos to hear. She put a hand on Carlos’s knee, sensing something was wrong and hoping he wouldn’t lie. “Positive?” But Carlos simply nodded and took another spoonful with a smile.
****************
Noel walked down the hall to the bathroom. She and Carlos shared one bathroom but were in separate rooms. This was the same for Mal and Evie. It middle of the night. Everyone had gone to bed a few hours after dinner because they planned to get up early the next morning to go sightseeing She tried to stay quiet and not wake anyone else in the hall. It was a very big place, everything echoed in there.
She kept opening and closing doors, which were mostly either studies or guest rooms. If her father could have gotten his hands (well, hooves) on this place, they would really be in trouble (because he would let the whole herd come); but she doubted she’d be seeing him again for a while.
Finally, Noel found what she was hoping was the bathroom. She turned the knob. The door was locked. Noel knocked. “I’ll be out in a second.” She heard Carlos say from the other side of the door in a wavered tone. “Just give me a-“ Carlos was cut off.
Noel could hear the sounds of retching and water splashing from the other side. “Carlos” Noel said, concerned. There was no response. She could hear the sound of Carlos groaning echo off the walls. Noel knew she needed to get in. She dug her hands through the pockets of her bathrobe. She found what she was looking for, a Bobby pin. “I’m coming in.” Noel told her boyfriend as she began picking the lock.
“Noel, no, wait” It didn’t matter, Noel was already inside. Carlos was sitting on his knees next to the toilet. Dude wasn’t far off, he must have followed Carlos. Carlos quickly tried to get up, too quickly. Carlos felt the room spin. He caught onto the sink and bore his weight onto it.
The bathroom smelled sour and of vomit. Dude ran up to him, he seemed grateful to the possible form of help that had come. “I knew you weren’t alright during dinner.” Carlos was pale and he eyes were reddened. Carlos began breathing heavily and shakily hurried to the toilet and threw up once more. Noel cringed at the sight and smell of Carlos upchucking what they had just eaten a few hours ago. Noel swallowed her disgust and walked to her boyfriend’s side.
Carlos felt Noel’s hand come up to rest against his back rubbing it in circles, waiting for his next spell to be over. Carlos felt as though he’d be alright for maybe minutes. He sat down on the cold tile flooring.
Noel sat with him, “How are you feeling?” She asked. She knew it was a stupid question.
“Like shit.” Carlos brought his knees up and rested his forehead to his arms rested on top.
Noel wrapped an arm around him, Carlos eased into the half hug. Noel could feel how warm Carlos was, he was running a fever. “Should I go tell Ben? Maybe he can bring you a doctor or something.”
“No don’t. He’s already done so much.” Carlos was mildly shaking.
Noel didn’t want to force him when he was already in pain. She just didn’t know how to help. She tried to think of all the knowledge she had on stomach flu’s. That is, if this was stomach flu. “Do you want to try taking a bath?” She asked him. “It’ll make you feel better”
Carlos slightly peaked from his arms. “A bath?” it didn’t sound too bad right now. “But what about…” He couldn’t find the right words.
“You don’t have to take all your clothes off, or I can go.” Noel said, understanding what she was trying to say.
“No stay, please.” Carlos held on Noel’s arm.
“So, yes to the bath?” Carlos nodded. Noel took her arm off Carlos. She got up and turned on faucet to warm. She waited for the water to be the right temperature before putting the stopper in to fill up the tub. She sat back down next to Carlos.
Carlos rested against Noel’s side. Neither of them said anything. Carlos was breathing heavily in a steady rhythm. He could feel his stomach churning. The cool floor tiles felt nice against his warmed skin. He was hoping he wasn’t about to throw up again; he knew he was, he could feel it coming up again. No, not again. Acting fast, Carlos grabbed the edge of the toilet and heaved himself over before he missed it.
Noel hadn’t gotten the chance to react; Carlos was hunched over the toilet vomiting. She felt her heart ache to see him like that, in pain and sick. Thankfully this time it wasn’t as much as before. Carlos spit the left over vomit from his mouth then groaned softly and sat back down.
The tub was half filled. “You ready to get in?” Noel asked. Carlos nodded and began by taking of his shirt. Noel helped him out of it. She let Carlos take his own pants of, and Noel took off the socks herself. Stripped down to his boxers, Carlos was helped up by Noel and guided to the tub. Dude moved out of the way. He held onto Noel’s shoulders and lowered himself slowly inside.
Carlos settled in. Noel was right, the lukewarm water felt nice and relaxing. He felt his headache go away a bit, his stomach eased; so long as he didn’t move too much it was wonderful.
Noel could see the comfort spread over Carlos’s face. “I’ll go get some towels. Will you be okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.” Carlos tried to smile a little.
“I’ll be back soon.”
Carlos sat in the water, leaning against the edge of the tub, submerging as much of himself under it as he could. The inside of his mouth tasted terrible. How could this have even happened? Was it because he had forced himself to eat that whole meal just to not seem too rude? No, he had felt sick even before that, he was just trying to ignore it then.
Dude sat right next to the tub. Carlos lifted a wet shaky hand and petted him from the top his head to his neck once, Dude licked his fingers afterwards. He hoped Ben wouldn’t mind them using his bathroom. He turned his head slightly to look around, it wasn’t too dirty, and most of the vomit had gone into the bowl. He held his breath and went under once to full immerse himself and came back up.
Carlos had been in there long enough for his fingers to begin to prune when Noel had come back. Noel knocked twice and let herself in. She was holding a few towels. “Sorry I took so long hon. I got lost.” Noel said setting the towels next to the sink. “This place is so big. It's like a T.A.R.D.I.S.”
"Like a what?" Carlos asked, confused at his girlfriend's remark.
"Like a T.A.R... Never mind." Noel replied. She forgot that Carlos had never seen nor heard of Doctor Who.
“I think I’m ready to get out now.” Carlos sat up slowly and propped himself up against the tub.
Noel took one of the towels and unfolded it, “Do you want my help?” She asked walking toward him.
“No, I got it.” He stood up trying to not upset his stomach. He must have stood too quickly. The room began to spin, he became lightheaded.
Noel caught him just as he started to fall forward, “I guess not.” She said trying to lighten the mood. Carlos had begun trembling a bit as he stepped out of the bath.
He felt as though he was going to be sick again. He quickly sat down on the cold tile shivering. He didn’t know if it was from chills or because he was cold. Noel bent over and cloaked the towel around him. Carlos wrapped his arms around Noel when she came close enough. He began breathing rapidly, trying to push it all down. “Sorry.” Tears pricked up in his eyes, he buried his head into Noel’s shoulder, “I hate this so much.”
Noel knelt onto floor easing into the embrace. She gently kissed the side of his head. “You have nothing to be sorry for sweetie.” She held Carlos, not letting go until Carlos did first. “Did you want to go back to your room?”
Carlos took a moment to answer, “Yeah I think I’ll be okay.” Noel nodded and stood up first. Carlos hugged Noel’s neck loosely, and Noel held onto Carlos’s sides to help lift him to his feet. Carlos winced in pain while he rose up. Noel took the other towel from the counter and draped it around Carlos’s waist, to keep him warm. Carlos kept one arm around Noel’s shoulder, and Noel kept an arm around his waist as they made their way to the door, with Dude following close behind.
Noel could feel Carlos trembling against her. They walked slowly; Carlos was too weak to move forward at a normal pace. Noel knew what she could do, but she wasn’t sure how good of an idea it was; she decided to at least give it a shot.
Carlos felt his stomach lurch and the pressure in his head flux. Before he could really do anything to protest, he was lifted off his feet. Noel was carrying him bridal-style, the two towels hung over her arms. “What are you doing?!?” Carlos said, holding onto Noel more tightly.
Noel used her foot to open the partially cracked door, just enough to walk out, “Going to your room.” She said in a matter-of-fact tone. She looked left and right in the long dim hallway, which was only lit by the moonlight coming from the giant windows. Noel re-positioning her arms a little to get a better grip on Carlos. “That is, if we can find it.”
“You'll hurt yourself carrying me!”
Noel turned her head to look at her lover, “Just let me do this for you.” She touched her forehead against Carlos’s, “okay hon?”
“I would kiss you if it wouldn’t taste so bad.” Carlos said with a small smile, he kissed her on the cheek instead.
Noel walked to Carlos’s room, helping each other find it. They only got lost once. The door was already partially opened; Noel passed the door by pushing it with her side. The room’s light was still on, the blankets and second sheet was thrown across the bed as though it was flung in a hurry. Noel walked over to it and placed one knee on it to balance herself better to place Carlos on the bed.
Carlos waited until he was on the bed to let go of Noel completely. “Thanks” he murmured rolling to his side looking for a comfortable position that didn’t hurt his cramping sick stomach. When found, Noel took the edge of the blanket and covered him. Dude jumped up and curled up next to his legs, over the blanket.
Noel was able to feel how warm Carlos was from his fever as she carried him down the hall. She took one of the wash cloths folded on top of the other towels that Carlos had been left in his room when he arrived. She poured some of the water from the pitcher in a basin on the bedside table to soak the cloth. She turned back over to Carlos and placed the cool wet towel onto his forehead.
Carlos hummed blissfully and turned to be on his back slowly. “I didn’t know you cared so much.”
Noel sat on the bed side. She pushed and smoothed over Carlos’s wet hair, “Oh zip it”. Carlos frowned slightly, his breathing became unsteady. The color drained from his face.
“Noel!” He nearly shouted distressingly “I think I’m going to-” He began breathing more quickly, grimacing in pain, he held his hand over his stomach. Noel knew what was going to happen, and if she didn’t act quickly, it wouldn't be pretty. She looked around the room hurriedly trying to find something. The waste basket; it would have to do.
She grabbed it and hand it to Carlos. “Here!” Carlos snatched it from her. He vomited into it. Noel looked away, feeling her own stomach’s disapproval; Dude looked up and made a noise equivalent to what Noel was experiencing on the inside.
Carlos put the basket next to his bedside and lowered himself back onto the bed, he winced in pain. “It’s so gross.”
“Yeah,” Noel agreed, she poured a cup of water from the pitcher, “It’ll help the taste.” Noel helped Carlos slightly sit up to take a few sips.
“Thanks.” Carlos said, Noel replaced the wet cloth to his forehead. “You don’t have to do this for me.” He said sheepishly.
Noel didn’t mind. She was already worried for Carlos. She didn’t want to say anything but if it were her choice, she would have brought a doctor to look at Carlos by now, even if it was the middle of the night. So many possibilities kept flowing through her mind of what could be wrong with Carlos. “I don’t mind. I want to.” Carlos’s hand came up to hold Noel’s. She just noticed that Carlos still hadn’t put any clothes on. “Did you want your pj’s? Don’t want to get sicker then you already are, right.”
“Noel please, stop” Carlos said squeezing her hand. “I’ll be fine. It’s probably just a small bug.” He scooted over, screwing his eyes shut in pain as he forced himself to move, mostly because of his pounding headache and stomach. He felt cold and yet warm, it hurt his chest to breathe deeply, some of his muscles hurt as though he had worked out be hadn’t. He patted the empty space next to him. “You can keep me warm. Let’s just hope I’m not contagious.” Dude moved along with him.
Noel didn’t protest. She laid next him, shimmying under the covers. “And you better take care of me the same way if you are.”
Carlos snuggled up to her, “Yeah, yeah, whatever.” Noel reached over to turn off the lamp. Slowly Carlos dosed off, but Noel couldn’t manage to do the same. At any moment Carlos could be up again, and Noel didn’t want to be sleeping through whatever may happen.
Throughout the night Carlos had only gotten up twice. Once to throw up again, he was down to bile at that point. And the second was to go to the bathroom. Noel had gotten Carlos to actually wear some clothes that time.
Carlos had managed to sleep through his sickness probably from the fatigue that came with it, but Noel on the other hand didn’t. She barely got any sleep; the only amount she got was very short spans of nodding off until her subconscious forced her back awake. It was dawn when she finally was assured enough that Carlos was stable to fall into a deep enough sleep to not be awoken again until someone else had to wake her up.
**********
The next morning Noel was awoken by a hard pounding at the door. “Carlos wake up!” it was Evie, “We gotta go eat so we can see as much as we can.” She stopped knocking, “Carlos you better be dressed, I’m coming in.”
Noel looked down at Carlos he was curled into a loose fetal position resting his head on Noel’s lower chest like a pillow. Dude was wide awake, laying at the foot of the bed, staring at the door then Noel, even he knew not to make too much noise for Carlos’s sake. He was beginning to stir from the noise Evie was creating. “Seriously Carlos” Evie flung the door open. Noel quickly shushed her.
She froze in her tracks, “Noel?” She was confused, “What are you doing here?” Her eyes widened, “Did you guys, did you guys have-” she blushed it was too awkward to finish.
Noel shook her head, “No,” she said in a quiet voice; she was hoping to not wake Carlos. She held up a hand to motion her to wait a moment. As gently as she could, Noel moved herself out from under Carlos. Carlos moved around uncomfortably but calmed within seconds. Noel re-covered him with the blankets and lead Evie out of the room, closing the door behind them.
“It’s not what you think.” Noel started, “He’s sick, I stayed with him.”
Evie nodded in understanding, “Poor guy. Should we tell Ben’s parents, maybe they can get a doctor to come in to see him?”
Noel knew that Carlos hadn’t want to trouble Ben’s parents, but they were going to find out sooner or later, they might as well find out sooner. Carlos really did need see a doctor, if not put Carlos at ease, then at least Noel. “Yeah, that’s a good idea.” She said. They walked down the hall together to the dining room for breakfast.
When they came in and explained why Carlos wasn’t with them. Ben’s parents immediately did just as Evie had suggested.
Within an hour and a half, Evie, Noel, Ben, Ben’s parents and Mal were all waiting outside of the guestroom for the doctor’s report. Finally the doctor came out; she closed the door and turned to them.
“It’s just a 24-hour flu. I’ve given him some medication and his fever hasn’t broken, but it should soon. He’ll be fine by tomorrow or the day after.” She assured them. “Just make sure he gets lots of fluids and rest. And give him 2 of these a day for a week, even if he feels better.” She handed a small paper bag to Ben’s mother. “Feel free to call if there’s anything else.”
“Thank you” Ben’s father said walking her out along with Belle.
The other teens stood together outside their friend’s room. “Well, I don’t know about you guys, but I’m going in.” Mal spoke up. She knocked twice as a warning and went inside, the rest followed her. “How are you feeling?” She asked when she was close enough to his bedside.
Carlos rose up and propped himself up on the pillows. Dude was sleeping at his side.“Better, well, better than last night at least.”
Evie stepped up next to Mal, “Hope you feel better.” She said.
“Yeah,” Ben added, “I’m sorry this had to happen while we’re supposed to be on vacation.”
“It’s okay.” Carlos said. It was uncomfortable having everyone looking at him; he didn’t want to feel like he was holding them back on their trip. He began to push off his blankets, “I’m fine. We can still go out and do stuff, right?”
“Carlos no.” Evie said, “The doctor told you to rest.”
“But-”
“But nothing,” Mal said “We can go in a day or two.”
Noel forced him to lie back down, and pulled the covers up. “Just stay in bed, please.” She said.
Carlos didn’t want to. He felt guilty, as though he was sabotaging their trip. It wasn’t really his fault, but that didn’t change anything. “Fine, but you guys aren’t staying back. Go without me.” Carlos said finally.
“We’re going to be here for more than a month, putting it off for a few days won’t hurt.” Ben said.
“No, go.” Carlos said very intent on it, “Please, like you said, we’ll be here for a while, I can go later.”
They all looked at each other as though debating telepathically whether or not they should go. “Are you sure?” Evie asked looking at Carlos.
“Yes of course I am.”
“Really” Mal didn’t want to hurt Carlos.
“Yes really now go get dressed and go. I want to hear about this place when you guys get back, ‘kay?”
Noel didn’t want to leave him alone, “I think I’m staying.” She said.
“Noel no” Carlos insisted.
Noel walked over to Carlos, “I didn’t really sleep well last night anyways. I’m too tired for a real outing.” Noel was only half lying, “Besides this way I could keep him company.”
That was it, the main reason and no matter how hard she was trying to mask it they all knew it; but they weren’t going to point it out.
“Fine then” Mal said, she understood.
“Get well soon.” Ben said, straightening his nightshirt by pulling at the bottom hems as a signal of his leaving, he walked towards the door
“Yeah,” Evie agreed following him, “We’ll bring you something back”
“Enjoy your alone time with each other.” Mal said with a smirk, Ben and Evie giggled slightly, “Cause this is all you guys are gonna get.”
Noel felt her cheeks grow warm. Everyone knew about their relationship, but they both weren’t as open or constant with public displays of affection, that didn’t mean that they had never kissed or shown the existence of their love in front of their friends but it wasn’t often and they would have to get somewhat comfortable first. Talking about it so openly and naturally just made Noel feel strange, but she liked it.
“I’ll see you later,” Noel said once they left, “now rest.” And she followed the rest of them out.
Eventually everyone left just after they got dressed and ate breakfast. Noel stayed back; she was still in her pajamas. She didn’t see the point in changing if she wasn’t going anywhere anyways. She wandered the halls until she reached Carlos’s room. She knocked once and let herself in.
The curtains were drawn, keeping the room dark with only the lamp and cracked amounts of the sun’s beams as light. Dude had moved to the couch against the wall for his afternoon nap. Carlos was in his bed, lying on his stomach, covered in a heap of blankets. She had assumed that he was asleep, but Carlos lifted his head and turned it around to look at Noel. “Hey,” He said sleepily, “C’mere” lazily patting the space next to him.
Noel obeyed and got into the bed and under the covers; she rested her head on the empty pillow, inches from Carlos’s face. “How are you feeling?”
“Noel, that’s the only thing you’ve been saying to me all day.” Carlos complained with a smile, “I’m fine really, the worst is over.”
“Sorry, you just scared me last night.” The bed was beginning to become very comfortable, all the sleep Noel had lost was beginning to catch up with her. Her eyes stung and were slowly growing heavy. She let out a yawn.
“Tired?” Carlos asked, he pushed Noel’s tousled bed hair out of her face.
“Yeah, a bit,” Noel said digging her head deeper into the pillow.
Carlos got closer to Noel, “You should take a nap then.” Carlos felt an arm come around his waist and pull him even closer to Noel.
“Maybe I should then.” Noel said, the corners of her mouth twitched as though in a smirk, she eyes closed though she knew she wouldn’t actually be going to sleep that fast.
“Mhmm” Carlos teased with closed laugh, he kissed Noel once. Noel, still closing her eyes gave him one quick kiss back in return. Carlos snuggled Noel and rested his head almost on top of her shoulder and rested an arm across her chest. Noel welcomed him and held him even tighter.
Neither of them said anything; they didn’t need to. They were content with just having each other and being together. Not even half an hour needed to pass before they both had fallen asleep, practically in each other’s arms.
